Scholarship opportunities for Pacific Islanders including Papua New Guineans; applications close on 02nd October 2016

FOLLOWING the announcement on World Humanitarian Day (19th August 2016) by the Australian Foreign Minister, the Honourable Julie Bishop MP, the Centre for Humanitarian Leadership is very pleased to offer in partnership with the Australian Aid Programme additional scholarships for Pacific Island citizens who are accepted as students on the Humanitarian Leadership Programme.

Australia recognises the pivotal role of leadership in effectively coordinating a humanitarian response. As a founding contributor to the Centre for Humanitarian Leadership, DFAT is committed to supporting individuals who play a key role in disaster management across the Pacific.

In a region that is experiencing an unprecedented risk from natural disasters, a proactive long term strategy to build disaster management capacity in the Pacific has been recognised by Pacific Islands Forum Foreign Ministers.

Australia, through the Australian Aid Program, is providing up to five (5) full scholarships, to be awarded in 2016. These scholarships build on the part scholarships already provided through the Centre for Humanitarian Leadership given the support of the IKEA Foundation. The aim of the scholarships is to provide awardees with the skills and knowledge to drive change and strengthen disaster resilience and disaster management efforts in their country.

Applicants will be assessed for their professional and personal qualities, experience and, most importantly, their potential to lead change and make a positive contribution to the disaster management sector.

The scholarships are offered on the basis of merit, transparency and equal access. We strongly encourage applications from women and people with a disability.

Scholarship eligibility criteria
Pacific applicants need to demonstrate the following:

• current employment in a Pacific government authority or organisation in Eligible Countries 
• citizenship of an Eligible Country
• five years’ experience of working with relevant government bodies, recognised national and international non-governmental organisations in the Pacific, UN Agencies, or private sector organisations
• a minimum of three years in a managerial role
• desire to develop your leadership skills in order to make a positive contribution to the future of the sector
• verbal and written English communication skills. 

Scholarship details

Scholarship recipients will receive the following:

• full tuition fees
• return air travel, visa expenses and travel costs for the residential components of the course.

· Federated States of Micronesia

· Fiji

· Kiribati

· Nauru

· Papua New Guinea

· Republic of Palau

· Republic of Marshall Islands

· Samoa

· Solomon Islands

· Timor Leste

· Tonga

· Tuvalu

· Vanuatu

Applications must be submitted online by midnight (12:00am) AEST Sunday 2 October 2016 at www.humanitarianleaders.org

Pacific Island citizens who wish to be considered for a scholarship should include PACIFIC HUMANITARIAN LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP at the top of their personal statement.

Applications or supporting documents received after this date will not be considered.
