MARU ANNOUNCES NEW MANAGEMENT FOR NSO AND PNGNID

PORT MORESBY, FRIDAY 28th SEPTEMBER 2018---- The Minister for National Planning and Monitoring, Hon. Richard Maru, today announced new management for the National Statistics Office (NSO) and the PNG NID Project.

Gazetted on Tuesday 24th of September 2018, the two acting appointments include Mr Michael Kumung to head NSO and Mr Noel Mobiha to head the PNGNID Project.

Mr Kumung was Acting Registrar General of the PNG Civil and Identity Registry (PNGCIR) since October 2017 and from that time, there has been changes and improvement to the integrity of the NID registration process.

The Government is confident that Mr Kumung who has a Master’s Degree in International Economics & Finance with strong background in Statistics from Australia’s Queensland University, has the capability to rejuvenate NSO to be the key institution that it is and get it prepared for the 2020 National Accounts – the National Census.

The PNG NID Project is a program that runs under the PNGCIR and it will be headed by Mr Noel Mobiha, a seasoned technocrat with a Masters in Engineering from the Auckland University, New Zealand. Mr Mobiha has been tasked to oversee the operations of the NID Project and to build up relevant infrastructure for the efficient and effective enrolment of some 8 million Papua New Guinea citizens by December 2021, ahead of the 2022 National General Election.

The Minister expects the new acting appointments to deliver on all fronts including a restructure of the NSO to a level where it is a recognised and credible reference point for the Government.
