AIR NIUGINI PLANE BOEING 737 OVERSHOOTS RUNWAY IN MICRONESIA

GUAM AVIATION office has confirmed that an Air Niugini plane crashed in waters in Chuuk state after it may have overshot Weno International Airport's runway earlier today.

The U.S. Coast Guard Cuttter Washington, which happens to be in nearby waters, is heading to the crash site to help. There have been no confirmed reports of serious injury.

Air Niugini Flight 73 was scheduled to take off at 9:55 a.m. from the airport on Weno island in Chuuk state, in the Federated States of Micronesia. It was bound for Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea. The light was to take two hours and 40 minutes.

A video reposted by Eriko Rekis on his Facebook page shows many people on small boats immediately responding as the aircraft hit the lagoon water.

A United Airlines flight from Guam that was scheduled to land in the same airport in Chuuk has been diverted to Pohnpei.

Air Niugini is Papua New Guinea's leading airline, with more than 20 destinations nationally and 10 internationally.

Police have confirmed that all of the passengers on board a plane that ended in the lagoon off Weno airport in Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia are safe.

A supervisor with the FSM national police confirmed to RNZ Pacific that all who were on board the Air Niugini flight are safe.
Boats had surrounded the now submerged plane when it first ended up in the lagoon to rescue passengers and crew.

It is not known whether the aircraft was trying to land or take off.

The Boeing 737-800 was scheduled to stop in Chuuk on its way from Pohnpei to Port Moresby.

Air Niugini management staff are currently in a crisis meeting.
