APEC Security Act not different from Sandline case

SHADOW Minister for Justice and Attorney General and Member for Sinesine-Yongomugl Hon. Kerenga Kua raises concern that the APEC Safety and Security Act passed in 2017 and amended in 2018 could hand over PNG’s sovereignty to foreign soldiers.

Mr. Kua said the Act directs citizens to threat foreign soldiers and security personnel the same as members of PNG Defence Force and Royal PNG Constabulary.
“Our defence force is the only organization in PNG that protects and defends our boundaries and sovereignty,” he added.

“You can’t contract that away to somebody else. Somebody tried to do it before in the Sandline case and the people of PNG thrashed it. Well, it’s happening again this time around, under the guise of APEC,” Mr. Kua said.

“If foreign soldiers or security forces happen to be involved in a shootout, somebody gets killed or murdered or injured, you can’t prosecute them. The law absolves that of all responsibility,” he said.

Foreign media has described PNG as the poorest nation amongst the APEC member countries and hosting the APEC Summit 2018 as ‘white elephant’. - Via Garamut News.
